LtCol Garth Massey. Understanding Good Leadership. Episode 137 with The Real Brad Lea (TRBL).

The title doesn’t mean you’ve earned it.

Get insights on what it takes to be a great leader in the boardroom from a man who’s led a thousand on the battlefield. In the 137th episode of Dropping Bombs, LtCol Garth Massey shares how he’s helping business leaders become command ready by applying the skills he developed in service.

Highlights from this not-to-be-missed episode below:

  • Get really good at a couple of core skills that you can use in any environment. If you try to learn too much, you’ll never be able to apply it all in a high-pressure situation.
  • There are no bad teams. At the same point, leading isn’t cheerleading or chastising. It’s inspiring others to do well by giving them purpose and direction.
  • You’re not helping people by solving their problems. Think your employees are lazy? It’s more likely that you’re training them to not take action by doing tasks for them instead of letting them try.
  • People want to do a good job, but they also want to be comfortable. Good leaders condition their people to do things right by creating an environment where everyone’s work is valued.

Finally, Massey shared the four rules he lives by. Follow these as you work towards any goal and you’ll never fail:

  1. Be impeccable with your words. When you say something, say something you mean.
  2. Don’t take it personally. Everyone has their own agenda.
  3. Don’t assume that those under you share your level of knowledge or perspective.
  4. Be the best version of yourself every day.
