Sergio started out teenage dropout with self-taught sales skills. After fearlessly immigrating halfway across the world in hopes of building a better life, he worked hard but made bad choices that set him back. Deciding not to quit, Sergio decided to shape himself with purpose. He ditched self-deprecating thoughts and mastered the skills needed to get ahead.
15 years later, Sergio Bruna is an entrepreneur, television presenter, writer, sales trainer and motivational speaker who impacts thousands of people every day.
Sergio starts by sharing what shaped his childhood the most.
I grew up without a father. My mom had to literally have two jobs to take care of. Three boys. I didn’t like my life, and I think the smartest thing I ever did was to quit school at 14. I’m not telling people to quit school, but for me, school was not working.
Uninspired by school lessons, he wanted to learn about communication, psychology and selling.
By 15, he saw sales as his way to a better life.
I started selling at the age of 15. I told my Mama, I don’t want to be a victim of my environment. I don’t like it here. This is not good for me. I want to go, I want to start working with you.
Sergio left Spain in search of better opportunities and went to Mexico City, where he started selling electronic taximeters. By 20 years old, he’d saved up enough to move to the United States.
Sergio discovered his sales skills were useful for more than closing deals.
I dissect this psychology of the buyer, the psychology of the salesperson. I discuss in depth and tonality, the mannerisms, the energy, the voice. In a fraction of a second, people already formed an idea of, of who we are. So it’s so important the way you clean your feet before you go into a customer’s home in front of them. So they can see that you’re somebody that cares, from the way that you smile at them to how you shake their hand firmly.
Seemingly unstoppable, he’d closed over 2000 deals. But, Sergio spent money as fast as he made it, buying tailored suits, five cars, and $1,500 dinners.
Sergio Bruna had five cars… and no money in the bank.
I don’t care how much money you’re making, if you’re not prepared for an emergency, what are you doing buying in so many cars, so many suits, right? That was a big part of my life, but it all comes down to that I cared too much of what people thought about me.
