On this episode of Dropping Bombs, Fox Business Expert Rob Luna advocates building your business so that you can sell it later on. In order to do that he recommends first doing the research to identify what sort of businesses are being acquired by large corporations, what multiple are they paying for them and what are they looking for in terms of how the business generates the revenue. Luna explains each of these characteristics help you to discover the type of private business you should be looking to create a long term growth plan with a proper business exit strategy.
Understanding finance and coming from the investment side, Rob Luna leans on a long career as an investment advisor to several high net worth individuals, corporations and endowments. Having partially exited his company for a 70% cash out he is happy that he took the time to build the business in a way that it could be sold. Although he admits he wasn’t thinking about selling at the time, he was certainly glad that he had done the work to be in a position to sell the company–regretting only that he happened to be a California resident and the business being based there left him paying a fair amount of taxes.

Rob Luna on Owning And Growing A Business In California
Rob Luna advocates building your business so that you can sell it is important, even if you don’t sell later. Bottom Line… You want to have the ability to take money off the table later if the opportunity presents itself for a partial or full liquidity event. When the offer came in to sell, Rob Luna said it was too good to pass up, but he wished he didn’t live in California at the time of the sale simply because of the taxes. When asked why not just get out of California? Luna replied “now I might as well stick around and enjoy some waves since we paid for it.”
Having had the successful exit, Rob Luna is now reaching out and investing in local businesses in the Los Angeles area. Having found a niche in the body shop repairs business with proper certifications and businesses that already have the contracts from major insurance companies to do the repairs. He sees it as a great way to help a local entrepreneur when they are the right fit, with the right day-to-day and good books. If the boxes check and Rob sees the opportunity as a wise one then he makes the work with them, make the investment, grow the business and help them do it with a properly planned business exit strategy.
